Feast of the Seven Fishes
It’s a long lived tradition in our family, as well as in many other Italian American households, that we celebrate the Feast of the Seven Fishes. This highly awaited celebration is always observed on the much revered Christmas Eve, as a symbol of the vigil for the birth of the Baby Jesus. The number of fishes varies within families, some are 5 or 9 or 11, but all carry biblical significance. We generally start with seafood cakes (shrimp and scallops), a cold pea soup shooter (with crab), and we always end with lobster, but these are the only items that remain fixed. What a dream, huh? This is my very favorite time of year and I can’t wait to begin our preparations for today! Which types of fish do your family celebrate with?
